For people wishing to settle in the UK, a certificate of competence in the English language is required as part of the visa application process.  The UK Border Agency has stated that this requirement now covers “anyone applying as the husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried partner, same-sex partner, fiance(e) or prospective civil partner of a UK citizen”.  This means that every Thai wishing to settle in the UK has to pass an English language test before applying for a visa from the British embassy in Thailand.

The test requirement has been graded as A1 under the Common European Framework of Reference, meaning that the applicant should be able to:

  • Understand basic words and phrases when spoken slowly and clearly.
  • Ask and answer simple questions on familiar topics.
  • Use simple phrases and sentences to describe yourself and your life.

Even though the requirements are at a low level, we understand that for many adults, taking a test can can a daunting prospect.  That is why our short pre-test course is designed around the actual test and so focusses solely on the language needed in order for you to answer all questions clearly and confidently.  Although we cannot guarantee the outcome, we can say that every applicant entering the exam room will do so with the best possible chance of success.

At the moment, the closest test to A1 level that is available in Thailand is the University of Cambridge ESOL Key English Test (KET), which is judged to be A2.  The next KET exam date scheduled for those wishing to take the test for Spouse Visa purposes is the 17th March 2012.  IH Bangkok are running a 15 hour exam preparation course during the week leading up to the exam (12th - 16th March), for which the cost is only 4,500 Thai baht.  To register, contact Graeme at info@ihbangkok.com.  If you are unsure whether you just need exam preparation or further study as well, you can come and visit us for a free English test and then discuss the study options available.
