Teacher TrainingInternational House Bangkok is an approved centre for the prestigious Cambridge teacher training CELTA qualification, the original "TEFL" course. Previously known as the CTEFLA, the CELTA is currently offered at over 280 centres in 50 countries worldwide, and is taken by a total of 10,000 trainees each year. International House Bangkok presently offers the course in three locations - each with its own particular character; Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, so whether it's the city, the countryside or the beach that attracts you, we have just the location.

When the Director of Studies at your first teaching interview asks, "Have you got a TEFL qualification?" you will realise just how important it was to choose the profession's most accepted initial teacher training qualification.

The CELTA courses at IH Bangkok are intensive, 4-week courses intended for those who wish to enter the TEFL profession but who have little or no previous experience of teaching English, or for teachers with some prior experience but no formal qualification in this field. Highly practical, with a content that is known and accepted throughout the TEFL and TESL industries, the CELTA course equips its trainees with the skills to teach adults in a variety of contexts.

The CELTA course includes the observation of experienced teachers, actual teaching practice, participation in the trainer input sessions and the completion of a range of practically focused written assignments.  There is no end-of-course exam but you are expected to have successfully:

  • Attended and participated in the course.
  • Completed 6 hours of teaching practice.
  • Observed 6 hours of lessons taught by experienced teachers.
  • Submitted 4 written assignments.
  • Maintained and submitted a portfolio of coursework, including lesson plans and self-evaluations.

Those trainees who have successfully completed the course will be awarded either a pass grade A, B or Pass, depending on the quality of the work and the continuous assessment by our trainers.

The International House World Organisation (IHWO) has been at the cutting edge of teacher training ever since its founders, John and Brita Haycraft, pioneered the very first classroom-based, practical training programmes in the 1950s. The IH network of 120 schools in 43 countries now trains over 3,000 teachers per year on the highly regarded CELTA and DELTA programmes. IH's founding philosophy and commitment to raising the standards of language teaching worldwide is the reason why our trainees receive not only the most widely recognized TEFL qualification there is, but also the benefits of training with the world's most recognized ELT training provider.

"I just wanted to send you a quick thank you for all the support and help you gave me over the CELTA course.  I was actually able to land a part time job teaching the Japanese army on Tuesdays thanks to my CELTA.  Your support and trust in my ability has already opened doors for me and I know will continue to open them as I make my way around the world... You made one girl from New Hampshire very happy because she now has her passport to the world!"
